A nice write-up by Watec, about their camera system of course, not about SNIFF, but the claims are pretty similar. What exactly hides behind verbage such as ‘intelligent camera’ and ‘detects treats and broadcasts real-time alerts and video without human intervention’ is anyone’s guess, but I suspect it’s not a virtual dog.
Introducing an “ideal solution for your perimeter security needs”:
Through an architectural design, an Intelligent Video Surveillance system can automatically detect threats and broadcast real-time alerts and video without human intervention. (…) These IP enabled, intelligent cameras are housed in either an IP66 polycarbonate housing or, for more rugged deployment, in an IP67 Aluminum housing enabling effective intelligent video surveillance in harsh operating environments.
To our amazement, some dogs encountering SNIFF are definitely curious about him, and some even aggressive.

Sniffing Sniff

Doggy interaction
Karolina did a bit of research and found some interesting studies hypothesizing that some individual dogs have higher cognitive abilities allowing them to interpret 2d images (posters, tvs, public projections) as their 3d world equivalents.
An excerpt from the book Dog behaviour, evolution, and cognition mentions “Dogs also show attraction towards biologically meaningful but static visual images such as the silhouette of a dog on a screen, their own mirror images, or video images of dogs.”
Turns out interactive art isn’t just for people, but puppies too!
Completely playable dog! He follows the person, reacts to taming and sudden gestures. There are still plenty of kinks to be worked out as always, but now it’s all the fun.
Incidentally all the passing dogs are pretty fascinated with Sniff, acting as if they’ve encountered a very strange real dog.
Sniff will be hosted by Not An Alternative at their The Change You Want To See gallery space during Conflux Festival. Stop by September 17-20th after dark and play with the puppy!

A screenshot of the openFrameworks application for video tracking people in front of the display. the second image shows a screeen grab of the Unity3d project above and the openFrameworks application below. OpenFrameworks sends OSC messages to Unity to inform the dog about the number of people in front the display, their position and their gestures.
